Is it true that fat cells are permanent?

I have heard it said that fat cells stay on the body forever. They just get smaller or larger. That is why they say it is easier to gain weight if you have already been overweight in the past. Is there no way to actually get rid of these fat cells or is this a falsehood?

I'm afraid that it is true. I don't know of any real way to make them go away. Exercise and proper diet to maintain a healthy weight is the only way to not create more fat cells in the future.

Yes it is, one of my friends is fat since he was a child it doesnt seem to go away.......

Its actually true that there is no permanent way to eliminate fat cells completely from the body. Their size shrinks and grows but if you are talking about totally eliminating them that's not realistic.

But its also true that when fat cells are empty they don't hold anything in them. I mean they exist but has no meaning. So why do I bother if they exist or not, if my body fat is 8% and I look and feel healthy then i don't care about the cells. Any change (food or exercise) is a lifestyle---that's what we have to think cause everything is temporary even the most advance athletes have to practice everyday to stay in the game....

So exercise and eat good and forget about fat cells think that you are letting someone live in your body.....lol

Fat cells are developed the most during adolescence and then they either store fat (which makes one fat!) or they shrink when you workout and keep a healthy diet.

So while you cannot get rid of them, you can keep them shrunk and away and be fit and fine!!

Is it true then that if one was overweight before, they have to work harder to keep the fat off then someone who was never overweight? It seems to be much easier to have the weight sneak back when you've been fat in the past.

Keep in mind that techniques like liposuction do take out fats and fat cells so fat cells are destroyed during liposution.

Thats true, one of my friend got liposuction done and he is now gaining fat in all the wrong areas like face etc.
